At Pearson’s Farm, animal rescue is more than a service – it’s our passion and purpose. Every year, we care for dozens of orphaned, injured, or displaced native animals, providing lifelong sanctuary or supporting their return to the wild.
Caring for Orphaned Kangaroo Joeys
One of the most important things we do at Pearson’s Farm & Animal Rescue is provide care and lifelong sanctuary for orphaned kangaroo joeys.
In South Australia, joeys that have been hand-reared cannot be released back into the wild. Human imprinting makes it nearly impossible for them to learn the survival skills they would need to thrive alone. This means they require lifelong care — a forever home where they are safe, nurtured, and loved.
Why Joeys Come into Care
Sadly, many joeys are orphaned due to tragic or preventable events, including:
Road accidents that claim the lives of their mothers
Mothers becoming entangled in fencing or wire
Illness, injury, or abandonment
When this happens, joeys are left completely vulnerable and dependent on carers for survival.
What Joeys Need
Raising a joey is both costly and time-consuming, requiring specialised care and resources, including:
Special kangaroo milk formula to support their growth
Heat sources and soft pouches that replicate a mother’s warmth and security
Round-the-clock feeding and care, often for many months
Large, secure enclosures with 180 cm fencing for their safety and wellbeing
With a lifespan of up to 25 years, these gentle animals need dedicated, long-term commitment to ensure they live safe, healthy, and enriched lives.
“We care for a wide variety of native wildlife, with kangaroos being the most common animals we help. Orphaned joeys cannot be returned to the wild and require intensive care, much like a human infant. Each joey costs at least $1,000 to hand-raise, not including vet care, hay, and specialised food. It is truly a labour of love, as the greatest challenge we face is providing these animals with a safe and permanent forever home”
Our Kangaroo Family
At Pearson’s Farm & Animal Rescue, we currently care for around 40 kangaroos, each with their own story of survival. Every year, more joeys arrive needing our help — and without sanctuaries like ours, their long-term future would be bleak.
Our mission is to give them not just safety, but also companionship, space to roam, and the dignity of living out their lives in peace. Visitors to our farm often describe meeting our kangaroo family as a truly moving and unforgettable experience.

Adopt a Joey
You can help by adopting one of our current babies in care. Each joey costs over $1,000 to hand-rear, and that’s before adding the cost of ongoing vet care, secure enclosures, and lifelong food and shelter. Your adoption directly helps cover the essentials — special formula, heating, pouches, and the day-to-day care that keeps these little ones thriving.
Volunteer Your Time
If you have some spare time and a big heart, we’d love to welcome you as a volunteer. Spending time with our joeys and other rescue animals provides them with enrichment, socialisation, and comfort. Volunteers help with feeding, cleaning, and giving our animals the attention and companionship they need. It’s hands-on, rewarding, and makes an incredible impact.
